What is a Fiber Reinforced cover block or Spacer Block?

A Fiber Reinforced Concrete Cover block is a specially engineered block designed to place the reinforcement bars at a right distance from the edges of a concrete structures so that concrete can flow under the reinforcement bars. A cover block is also called as a spacer block. It is called as a cover block or spacer block because it provides the space between the reinforcement bars in the formworks. It also acts as a cover to lift the reinforcement bars off the ground. This is majorly used in reinforced cement concrete construction both before and during concreting so that the concrete can flow freely under the reinforcement bars.

Why and when does your construction site need a Fiber Reinforced concrete Cover Block or Spacer Block?

The reinforcement bars in the construction site will need a cover block or spacer block for the following reasons

• Corrosion: On continuous exposure to the environment, the steel reinforcement bars have high chances of undergoing corrosion. In order to prevent corrosion, rebars must be embedded in the concrete with cover blocks or spacer blocks which will avoid premature failures in the construction sites.

• Bonding: In a reinforced cement concrete construction, the steel reinforcing bars are embedded in the concrete which is made up of cement, gravel & water at proper proportions. Such embedded steel bars will need cover blocks or spacer blocks for proper bonding so that stress from concrete is transferred to steel and the steel bars are prevented from slipping away from the concrete.

• Protection: As the water starts escaping through evaporation from the concrete mixture, the concrete becomes hard and leads to cracks. Providing proper spacing with the cover block or spacer block between the concrete and the reinforcement bars can prevent the likelihood of cracks as both the surrounding concrete and concrete spacers share similar thermal expansion properties. This thermal expansion properties provide thermal insulation which also provides fire protection.

Critical Aspects:

• The cover must be the same grade of the surrounding concrete that is used for embedding the reinforcement bars. It is crucial to decide an optimum cover which must not be very thick or thin than the surrounding concrete. This optimum selection will prevent cracks and gives higher life to the building structure.

• The typical range for concrete covers on rebars in standard Reinforced Concrete (RCC) structures is between 15mm and 50mm. However, in more robust infrastructures and under severe environmental conditions, this dimension may extend to 100mm or even exceed this value.
